Yoga in the Park
Join yoga instructor Abby Chmil for an inclusive, accessible class designed to support both body and mind through breathwork, meditation, and mindful movement. You'll explore poses on the mat, kneeling, and standing—with flexible options to match your comfort and energy level. Every body is different, and so is every yoga practice—but we think you’ll leave this one feeling grounded, refreshed, and recharged.

Art Therapy
Art Therapy invites you to explore your thoughts and emotions through creative expression. Using different artistic tools and techniques, we’ll focus on themes like mindfulness, self-awareness, self-esteem, emotional regulation, anxiety, stress, relationships, life changes, coping skills, and grief. No artistic skill is required—just a willingness to explore and reflect.

Tai Chi on the Lake
Join Tai Chi practitioner Vernice McDaniel for a slow-flow session focused on gentle movement, mindfulness, and stress relief. You’ll learn how to weave simple, restorative exercises into your routine to boost balance, flexibility, mood, and overall well-being. Cancer Fighting Smoothies
Cancer treatment can make it hard to eat well—but a nourishing smoothie can be an easy win. Stop by to sample a delicious, nutrient-packed smoothie crafted to support your health and taste buds. Each month features a fresh new recipe, made with care and loaded with fruits, veggies, and flavor.

Colored-Pencil Basics with Saveria Giovinazzo
No drawing skills required. All materials provided.
Saveria has designed this class to make it easy to explore what can be created with color pencils.
Students will use stencils and image transfers as the basis for their pieces, then use colored pencils to add color.

Yoga Pop-Up: Back to Reality
Ready or not summer is coming to an end – get back into a routine slowly with this special pop-up class designed by Amy Koenig. Everyone is welcome whether you’re looking for a way to stretch or destress, want to try a new form of exercise, are an experienced yogi, or anything in between.

History Stroll Through the Pointes
Explore Grosse Pointe’s iconic landmarks during a History Stroll featuring tours at American House, The War Memorial, and the Ford House, plus light refreshments at each stop.

In coordination with the DIA’s Inside-Out Program that has brought reproductions of 14 pieces from its world-class collection to our community, the Grosse Pointe Artists Association is offering workshops that take deep dives into two of the paintings:
• Cafe Scene in Paris by Henri Gervex
• Self Portrait with a Straw Hat, Vincent van Gogh
Artist/Teacher Donald Cronkhite, whom students describe as “passionate, knowledgeable andencouraging,” will lead both workshops and provide all necessary materials to make a copy. Making copies of master artworks is a time-honored practice in art education and is a valuable way to learn about technique, composition and the thought processes of great painters. Art enthusiasts at all levels of experience are welcome.

Preschool Playtime
Parents and caregivers join in the fun as little ones play, sing, and dance.
Please note families should attend only one class per week, follow the age recommendation, and keep in mind this is an interactive class designed for adults to participate.

Explorations in Abstraction with Valerie Allen
Join artist Valerie Allen for a two-day workshop using the power of process to create paintings in acrylics.
As a Certified Working Artist for Golden Paints, Val will bring an array of acrylic products including colors, gels, pastes and other mediums for you to use, offering you the opportunity to explore the versatility of acrylic products and increase your confidence in painting abstractly.

Free Bikes 4 Kidz Collection Event
The War Memorial will serve as a drop-off site for the Free Bikes 4 Kidz non-profit. Over the last seven years, this non-profit has given underserved kids in the Metro-Detroit community 14,614 bikes – each one with a new helmet – getting kids started on a happier, healthier childhood.

Encaustic and Collage Workshop with Candace Law
We can thank Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso for introducing collage in the early 1900s.
In this class we'll follow their lead on collage, but add encaustic (hot wax) that can be used both as an adhesive and as a paint.
If you are new to the medium, this is an opportunity to learn more about painting with hot wax.
For the more advanced, this is an opportunity to push your creative process.
Demonstrations will be combined with one-on-one time with the instructor and individual work time so you can learn additional ways to incorporate encaustic into your own artistic projects.
We are inviting you to spend a creative day learning more about this lovely, versatile medium and how to blend it with other materials.

Paintings from Family Photos with Liz Frankland
Together you will bring your favorite family photos to life. The photos you choose to work from can be in black and white and/or color, from any era. If you are unsure which photo to choose, bring a few options and Liz will discuss the compositional elements with you, helping you determine the best one to use as a reference.

Authors to the Pointe: Elizabeth Gilbert
The Grosse Pointe Library will host their popular "Authors to the Pointe" lecture at the War Memorial on Wednesday November 5th. This event will feature nationally acclaimed author and journalist Elizabeth Gilbert, whose book "Eat Pray Love" has sold over 30 million copies.

The Special Needs Resource Alliance is a collaboration of local non-profit organizations, school systems and service providers who work together to offer exceptional support for individuals with special needs in Southeast Michigan, sharing the goals of embracing, supporting and developing social and educational opportunities for individuals with special needs and their families

Celebrate National Teddy Bear Picnic Day with Us!

Introduction to Pen and Ink plus Watercolor with Saveria Giovinazzo.
Pen and Ink plus Watercolor is a class with something for artists with all levels of experience from the beginner to the experienced.
During class we will focus on pen and ink mark-making techniques using both step-by-step drawing instructions and printed images. There will be multiple pen and ink mini projects. Ink and watercolor washes will also be explored.

One of the best ways to learn posthumously from a master painter is to paint a “master copy." In this workshop we will study John Hoppner's portrait of Susannah Edith Lady Rowley by John Hoppner. You can see it at the Detroit Institute of Arts. It was given to the DIA by Mrs. Horace Dodge in honor of her husband.

9th Annual Promising Artist: Gallery Talk

Introduction to Kirie, the Japanese Art of Paper Cutting with Nobuko Yamasaki
In this workshop Nobuko Yamaski will teach Kirie, the ancient Japanese art of paper cutting. A noted cutout picture artist is the late Takidaira Jiro.
To make Kirie art, the class will cut out a simple design in black paper, then lay it on a sheet of Bristol paper colored with pencils in bright colors.

Landscapes In The Style of Claude Monet with Donald Cronkhite
One of the best ways to learn posthumously from a master painter is to paint a “master copy."
In this workshop we will study Branch of the Seine near Giverny (Mist), one of 18 works in Monet's Mornings on the Seine series. He painted the works from a flat-bottomed boat anchored to the riverbank where the Epte River flows into the Seine. As the light changed fro dawn to day, he worked on one canvas after another.To keep them in order, he numbered them, placed them in grooves built into the boat and had the gardener, whom he enlisted as his assistant, hand them to him.

YOUR OLD MANSION: Ford Power on the Water
For the fifth and final lecture of the series on April 6, historian Mike Kroll will offer a side of Edsel Ford that isn’t often talked about. You probably already know he introduced fine lines and fast motors to the cars produced on the Ford assembly lines, and he paid for the famous Rivera murals at the Detroit Institute of Arts. But did you know he also enjoyed racing powerboats? He used one of them to commute from his home on Lake St. Clair to the office at the Rouge Plant in Dearborn.

Portraits In The Style of Max Beckman with Donald Cronkhite
One of the best ways to learn posthumously from a master painter is to paint a “master copy." In this workshop we will study Max Beckman's Self Portrait in Olive and Brown. You can see it at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
Beckman is one of the leading German expressionist painters. He escaped Nazi German in 1937 and lived in exile in Amsterdam during the war. He started painting this portrait after the German troops withdrew from Amsterdam at the end of the war. He completed it on Nov. 29, 1945, noting in his diary -- "Germany is dying, et moi -- self-portrait 1945 finished.
