Nuno Felting with Ann Jacob

This class involves utilizing the natural characteristics of wool fiber to create a fabulous scarf or wrap to keep or give as a gift.  We will begin by dyeing silk gauze to one or multiple colors then adding the wool fibers to it in either a random or patterned way.  The process involves agitating the silk and wool fiber in hot, soapy water until the fibers start to bond. Household rubber glover are needed for this.  The results are fairly immediate and really stunning. As an option, we may embellish the scarf with beads, ribbons and embroidery stitches. Students will also learn to make an accessory to add to the scarf or use in another project.

The materials fee includes silk fabrics and silk scarves, dyes, embellishments, fiber, ribbons, yarns and felting equipment.

Students should bring household rubber gloves.

Portraits In The Style of John Singer Sargent

Portraits In The Style of John Singer Sargent

One of the best ways to learn posthumously from a master painter is to paint a “master copy." In this workshop we will learn from John Singer Sargent's Study of an Egyptian Girl. You can see it at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Sargent went to Egypt in 1891 in search of source material for a mural commissioned by the Boston Public Library. Like many 19th-century European artists, he was drawn to the Egypt by its ancient history. For this study, Sargent returned to his academic training, carefully modeling the girls's facial structure and using a range of flesh tones, rather than relying on the swift, visible brushstrokes that characterize his society portraits.
