Join us for a healing evening aimed at releasing physical and mental tension through a combination of yin and restorative poses, breathing, lots of hands-on massage, and a cellular level healing sound bath session.
Instructor Dena Bostwick is a Registered Yoga Teacher with over 500 hours of training, who has had a personal practice for over 15 years. She completed her 200 Hour Teacher Training at Lifetime in Bloomfield, MI and her 300 Hour Teaching Training in Koh Samui, Thailand at Vikasa with world renowned Yoga Teacher, Jonah Kest and Yoga Philosophy & Meditation Master, Alexey Vyazovov.

Cocktails and Mocktails Class
Join The War Memorial’s lead bartender Matt for a fun Wednesday night on June 11th at 7pm. Matt will demonstrate 3 different cocktails, 2 different mocktails and each class attendee will get the opportunity to mix up one cocktail and sample all five.
Participants will be seated at tables of four - if you’re coming with a group, let us know so we can seat you all together, or come alone and make new friends! Each participant also receives a charcuterie box snack, copies of all recipes, and their own jigger (to use in class and take home!) for measuring.

Our War Too: Women in Service at The Henry Ford
Making its Midwest traveling debut, Our War Too: Women in Service is a groundbreaking special exhibit honoring the nearly 350,000 American women who answered the call to serve their country during World War II.
The exhibit runs from May 25-September 7 at The Henry Ford in Dearborn.
Made up of unique and colorful artifacts from The National WWII Museum's collection, the exhibit explores the efforts, struggles and accomplishments of these servicewomen, the impacts of which extend into the present day.

Memorial Week concludes with Memorial Day
Following An Evening of Red, White & Blue, and Our Community Salutes at The War Memorial, Memorial Week wraps up on May 26 with Memorial Day.
On May 26, the community solemnly gathers at The War Memorial for a poignant moment of remembrance for the courageous souls who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our cherished freedoms. The ceremony also includes musical tributes, remarks of remembrance and honor, and a recitation of the names of Grosse Pointe residents who lost their lives in service to our country.
This year’s keynote speaker is Lt. Col. Stephen Klenke, 127th Wing Base Civil Engineer at Selfridge Air National Guard Base.

Upcycling art show begins June 11
The deadline is fast approaching for entries to a Grosse Pointe Artists Association show.
All entries must be received by May 26 for Upcycling, the theme of the show.
Upcycling is the creative reuse of everything from trash to old artwork resulting in something more functional, beautiful or valuable than the original. It is open to all media (2D & 3D) except installations.
The show’s juror is Doug La Ferle who is well known for his prizewinning interactive robotic sculptures that reflect his love of art, science and salvage.
A gallery talk is set for 6:30 p.m. on June 12 at the Artists Association gallery at The War Memorial.

Veterans Weekend – A Salute to Allied Victory in World War II
Join Selfridge Military Air Museum as they salute veterans and Allied victory in World War II.
On May 17 and May 18, the museum will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II with a weekend that features specific exhibits from the Pacific and European Theaters of Operation.
Military vehicles, like Gen. Dwight Eisenhower’s staff car, and Gen. MacArthur’s staff car, will be on hand. Also making an appearance, the 126th Army Field Band performs on May 17 from 4 to 5 p.m.

Class includes 1.5 hours of instruction and demonstration from Suki Liu of Signed By Suki, our beginner’s calligraphy kit (two nibs, black ink pot, 2 letter guides, tracing paper and straight pen holder), and all materials to write on. Everything is yours to keep at the end of the class!

Our Community Salutes
After a short hiatus, The War Memorial brings back Our Community Salutes when the Class of 2025 high school seniors from the Detroit area who have made the honorable decision to enlist in the United States Armed Forces are celebrated. The event is set for May 22, beginning with a resource fair and reception, followed by the recognition ceremony.
This special evening is dedicated to these young men and women and their families, acknowledging their commitment to serve our nation. The event provides a meaningful opportunity for the community to express gratitude, offer support, and celebrate their transition into military service.

The exhibit, titled The Long Vietnam War, includes artifacts and stories from Vietnam War veterans, family members, and organizations The Grosse Pointe News, Swords Into Plowshares Peace Center and Gallery, Burton Historical Collection, and the Michigan Military Technical & Historical Society.
The exhibit will run thru Veterans Day in The Patriot Gallery which is located underneath the Ballroom of the Fred M. Alger Center on the waterfront side.

In our 225th edition of Inspired Thoughts, in an upcoming workshop, Nobuko Yamaski will teach Kirie, the ancient Japanese art of paper cutting; and gather at The War Memorial on April 23 and April 30 for Morning Community Yoga.
Introduction to Kirie, the Japanese Art of Paper Cutting
In this workshop Nobuko Yamaski will teach Kirie, the ancient Japanese art of paper cutting. A noted cutout picture artist is the late Takidaira Jiro.
To make Kirie art, the class will cut out a simple design in black paper, then lay it on a sheet of Bristol paper colored with pencils in bright colors. Because Kirie takes cutting skills, this is a perfect follow-up class for students who have taken Japanese woodblock classes.
Students are asked to bring their design, a ruler, a red ball pen, carving knives, tape, and colored pencils.

Tigers baseball is back at Comerica Park!
Play ball! Coming off an appearance in the American League Divisional Series last season, the Detroit Tigers are back for another exciting year of action at Comerica Park.
The teams home opener is set for Friday, April 4 at 1:10 p.m. against American League Central Division foe Chicago White Sox.
In 2024, the hometown boys finished with a regular season record of 86-76, tied for second place in the division. In the playoffs, they defeated the Houston Astros in the Wild Card round before losing in five games to the Cleveland Indians.
Top returning players this year include 2024 Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal, Jackson Jobe, Kerry Carpenter, and Riley Greene.

Portraits In The Style of Max Beckman with Donald Cronkhite
One of the best ways to learn posthumously from a master painter is to paint a “master copy." In this Grosse Pointe Artists Association workshop, we will study Max Beckman's Self Portrait in Olive and Brown. You can see it at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
Beckman is one of the leading German expressionist painters. He escaped Nazi German in 1937 and lived in exile in Amsterdam during the war. He started painting this portrait after the German troops withdrew from Amsterdam at the end of the war. He completed it on Nov. 29, 1945, noting in his diary -- "Germany is dying, et moi -- self-portrait 1945 finished."

Evening with Karl Marlantes: Echoes of the Vietnam War
Best-selling author and Vietnam veteran Karl Marlantes discusses war, service, and storytelling in an evening featuring a talk, moderated conversation, and audience Q&A at The War Memorial.
A Yale graduate and Rhodes Scholar, Marlantes served as a Marine in Vietnam, earning the Navy Cross, Bronze Star, and other honors. His celebrated novel Matterhorn was hailed by The New York Times as “one of the most profound and devastating novels ever to come out of Vietnam—or any war.” His other works include Deep River, exploring Finnish immigrants in the Pacific Northwest, and his latest release, Cold Victory, which examines Finland's political climate during World War II.
The April 9 event begins at 6pm with a VIP Reception, followed by a keynote speech at 7pm and photo opportunity at 8pm.

Vietnam Veterans Day Luncheon
Veterans and their families are invited to a special luncheon honoring the bravery and sacrifice of Vietnam War veterans.
Enjoy a warm gathering on Saturday, March 29 to connect, share stories, and explore veteran resources. Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency Director Brian Love will deliver a keynote address and lead a pinning ceremony for Vietnam veterans.
The luncheon, held on National Vietnam War Veterans Day, is part of our commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.

The Dave Bennett Winter Brunch Series resumes on Sunday, Feb. 22 when Sean Dobbins takes to the stage at The War Memorial. Dobbins, who has played in the Brunch Series before, describes his sound as hard-driving, solid rhythm with refreshing melodic sensibility.
“Sean is one of the finest drummers in the country and his groups are always top notch and a lot of fun to come out and see. He’s an animated drummer and his skills are impeccable,” Bennett said.
Relax and enjoy a spectacular brunch from The War Memorial's executive chef team, your choice of mimosa or bloody mary, and performance guaranteed to melt winter’s chill. The series concludes on Sunday, March 30 with Bennett and his band.

Conflict and Healing Lecture Series with Dr. Judy Jacobs
Her hope is that the lectures aren't just informative, but also interactive.
As part of The War Memorial’s commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, Dr. Judy Jacobs will lead a two-part lecture series titled “Conflict and Healing.” As part of the series, Jacobs will explore the impact of trauma and the journey toward resilience.
“I’ll share some things to do to have a brighter outlook on your life,” she said. “Our veterans have also been good at taking care of themselves and socializing with each other. I want them to share their experiences. Everyone has experiences and I think there is a lot to talk about.”
The first lecture, The Psychology of Trauma, is on Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. The series wraps up on March 16 at 2 p.m. with Part Two: Managing the Stressors of the Day.

The fair is set for Feb. 25 from 3:30-7 p.m. The fair is dedicated to parents and caregivers who are looking for supportive opportunities for their neurodiverse children. It's a completely free event with a wide variety of educational, recreational and occupational resources along with mental health, legal and government services for all ages.

This year’s edition of Sing to Love, our annual Valentine’s dinner and concert event, features an incredible menu curated by War Memorial Executive Chef Joe Paxton, capped off by an evening concert from noted jazz vocalist Ramona Collins, accompanied by pianist, Cliff Monear.
The three-course dinner includes roasted MI beet and goat cheese salad, short rib bourguignon, and Queen Mothers Torte.

Second Saturdays at TWM: Cupid’s Corner
Join us for the next installment of our new Second Saturdays Series at the War Memorial!
On Saturday, Feb. 8 at 9 a.m., gather for a fun line-up for kids and their families. Activities this month include decorating beads and stringing them to create a fun, easily removable bracelet, Storytime with Princess Rapunzel, an onstage show, and more!

Winter Blast in downtown Royal Oak returns this weekend!
Winter Blast Royal Oak is a free admission community event taking place Jan. 31-Feb. 2. The event features live music, free ice skating, ice sculptures, medieval village, zip line, food trucks, kids adventure zone, ninja ropes course adventure, free family activities and more.
Winter Blast will showcase live, local musicians on multiple stages throughout the weekend. Each stage will be located in a heated area, with video screens located on the outside of each tent so folks can watch the shows through out the festival.

In our 213th edition of Inspired Thoughts, in The Possibilities of Oil Pastels, students will be introduced to the preferred medium of masters; and join the Grosse Pointe Chamber of Commerce at its annual breakfast on Jan. 30 at The War Memorial.
The Possibilities of Oil Pastels with Saveria Giovinazzo
In The Possibilities of Oil Pastels, students will be introduced to the preferred medium of masters such as Edgar Degas, Jean Francois Millet and Vincent Van Gogh and encouraged to develop their own style using the medium.
Experienced instructor Saveria Giovinazzo will introduce the tools used, and lead the class through multiple exercises and small projects encouraging them to explore the potential of oil pastels in their own work.
The materials fee will cover a set of 12 oil pastels for each student to keep as their own and the instructor will supply the tools needed for the exercises and projects. Classes are 10 am - noon on Fridays through Feb. 7.

Our Hike up Mount Kilimanjaro
Artist Melissa Stieber and her husband photographer Patrick Stieber from Owen Sound, Ont., Canada hiked to the summit Mount Kilimanjaro at the border of Kenya and Tanzania. Rising from the acacia forests and scrublands at the border of Kenya and Tanzania, Kilimanjaro is 19,343 feet, making it the world’s tallest freestanding mountain.
The Jan. 12 event is the second lecture at The War Memorial as part of the Grosse Pointe Artists Association Your Old Mansion series.
You will get the details of how they prepared for the climb, hear about challenges they faced making it to the top, as well as the excitement of looking down from the summit on the sprawling savanna far below.
