August heats up with SummerFest at The War Memorial

Summertime means family fun on the lake — and at The War Memorial, that means SummerFest!

This month’s lineup of SummerFest programming includes hits from the '70s to today, a movie sing-a-long of a beloved musical, a showstopping Motown performance, and more!

First up is the Persuasion Band on Aug. 13 which brings the best of pop, rock, R&B, and funk to life in a way that will keep you on your feet all night long. The following week, on Aug. 20, grab your friends, family, and your best singing voices for a magical evening under the stars as we relive the iconic story of Elphaba and Glinda with a screening of the beloved musical Wicked.

For the final SummerFest concert, gather on Aug. 27 for an unforgettable night of soul, rhythm, and pure Motown magic with Motown Museum Hitsville Arts Drey Skonie & The Klouds! This talented ensemble brings the sounds of Motown to life, paying homage to the legendary hits that made Detroit the heartbeat of American music. Prior to that concert, join us at 6 p.m. for a special pre-concert talk led by Chris Hemler, who will explore the powerful role of music in the 1960s, a decade marked by war, protest, and social change.

While SummerFest tickets are free, we do ask that you register with us here.

Detroit exhibit focuses on Vietnam War commemoration

A new exhibition at the Detroit Historical Museum is shining a light on the history, sacrifice, and continued service of the Vietnam Veterans of America Detroit Chapter #9.

Titled “Welcome Home: Vietnam Veterans of America Detroit Chapter #9,” the exhibit runs through Oct. 19 in the Robert and Mary Ann Bury Community Gallery. The opening comes as the nation commemorates 50 years since the end of the Vietnam War—a poignant moment of reflection and recognition.

Exhibit highlights include a full-scale Huey helicopter replica, combat-era gear, dog tags, handwritten letters, and medals, and more.
