Color for the Abstract Painter with Marcia K. Hales
This painting workshop is designed for artists of all abilities who work abstractly and/or non-representationally and want to use color to strengthen the impact, energy and effectiveness of their art. We will talk about color hue, value and saturation.
Plein Air with Donald Cronkhite
This class is designed for dedicated, advanced painters seeking to refine their plein air skills. The instructor will demonstrate materials and share tips as well as offer support as students progress in their craft. Group critiques and collaboration with peers will be encouraged
as the individual artists work to master their painting techniques.
Teddy Bear Picnic
Celebrate National Teddy Bear Picnic Day With Us!
Bring your favorite teddy bear or stuffed friend and join us for a fun-filled hour of singing, dancing, and more! Toddlers and their parent/caregiver will have a great time playing together on the lawn overlooking the lake during this structured class led by Danielle Mitchelson.
Exploring Encaustic on Paper with Candace Law
New to encaustic or just want to brush up on your skills? This class offers you a perfect opportunity to get started. There will be demos, one-on-one time with the instructor, as well as ample time for individual work.
Kids Coalition Against Hunger Packing Event
Calling all members, friends, seniors, parents, students, scouts, honor societies, service clubs - anyone who wants to help pack some nutritious meals for the hungry. Some will go overseas, some will be served locally and some meals will be saved for disaster relief. There is so much need - won't you help?
Alger Center Bridge Club
Join the Alger Center Bridge Club every Tuesday 12-4pm in our Community Room. If you do not know how to play, NO PROBLEM! You can learn the rules on your first day. Polishing up the tarnished city that was once called the “Paris of the Midwest,” the Grosse Pointe Artists Association brings back its popular fundraiser, Your Old Mansion, a lecture series celebrating the past and present of Detroit.
The Family Center Community Book Club
We are excited to announce a partnership between The War Memorial and The Family Center for an upcoming book discussion of The Good Life by Robert Waldinger. This event is a great opportunity for community members to come together and explore the themes of the book, which explores the secrets to happiness and fulfillment. We hope to see you there!
Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs Event
Join us as we celebrate Michigan’s military, benefitting Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs. The event is set for the 79th anniversary of D-Day, June 6. It will feature Les Braves II: At Water’s Edge- an art installation dedicated to the allies that landed on Omaha Beach in 1944 during World War II.
Public Safety Night
The Family Center of Grosse Pointe & Harper Woods will host a Community Safety Night in partnership with The War Memorial on May 16, from 7-8 p.m.
The program includes a discussion about crime prevention and emergency preparedness with Grosse Pointe Farms Police Chief John Hutchins, Deputy Chief Andrew Rogers, Sgt. Tony Trupiano, and Public Safety Officer John Ross. Information will be shared about home and car theft, cyber security, and community emergency protocols. Following the presentation, attendees can talk with local vendors to learn more about prevention and protection options.
