Brought to you by the Grosse Pointe Artist Association:

OVERVIEW

Become more confident painting portraits in this four week class!
Liz will guide you through several exercises designed to increase your knowledge of anatomy and decision making through brushwork. Building from initial studies of individual features, each student will complete a portrait of their choosing. Liz will demonstrate in each session and provide individual guidance.

OBJECTIVES

1. Focus on the planes of the face through small quick paint studies.

2. Paint an eye, nose and mouth, ear.

3. Practice color mixing for skin tones.

4. Paint a portrait of your choosing.

MATERIALS NEEDED

This is an oil painting class. Liz highly reccomends using oils for portraiture as they stay open longer and have wonderful blending qualities. In the class demonstrations are in oil and you will benefit from working in the same medium. Liz will have paints and solvents available for anyone who is unsure or is accustomed to different media. Otherwise please bring the following materials:

1. Oil paint of each primary color, white and black

Cadmium Red

Cadmium Yellow

Ultramarine Blue

Titanium White

Mars or Ivory Black

Optional Paints:

Burnt Umber

Burnt Sienna

Yellow Ochre

Sap Green

2. Paint brushes, round , flat and filberts, various sizes 1-6

3. Gamsol for paint thinning

4. Linseed oil

5. Palette knife and pallette. I use a pad of disposable palette paper large size 12X16

6. Plenty of rags and containers for gamsol and linseed oil

7. Substrates to paint on. This is a personal choice. Canvas, board or oil paper all work nicely. You will need several smaller ones for studies, paper works great for this. Liz likes Arches oil paper for example but there are plenty to choose from. For the finished portrait you may bring a canvas or continue on oil paper. We can discuss this once class begins to get a better idea of your direction.

The most important part is to have fun and immerse into painting during this time together!
