Celebrate Irish pride at Detroit’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade

You don’t have to be Irish to channel your inner leprechaun.

The Detroit St. Patrick's Parade, a tradition in Corktown, is set for 1 p.m. on March 12. The 65th annual parade starts at Sixth Street near Bagley, goes north toward Michigan Avenue, and left on Michigan. It ends at Fourteenth Street.

The Corktown parade will be filled with marching and pipe and drum bands, color guard units, floats, clowns, novelty groups, and marching units. The parade will last roughly two hours.

This parade is one of the largest St. Patrick’s parades in the country attracting 80,000-100,000 people annually.

There is also a Family Fun Zone that will have live entertainment, a heated grandstand to view the parade, face painting, and more. It will be open from 11:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for a single one or $60 for six.

The War Memorial partners with local church for packaging effort

The need to feed is constant for one organization.

Grosse Pointe Memorial Church is hosting a packaging event with Kids Coalition Against Hunger on Saturday, March 18.

Three shifts of packaging will take place in The Alger Center at The War Memorial- 10 a.m. to noon, noon to 2 p.m., and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The goal is to package over 75,000 meals.

Sue Acton, coordinator of outreach ministries at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, said the church is hoping to have 150 volunteers per shift. To register to volunteer, click here.

Kids Coalition Against Hunger is a 501©3 humanitarian food aid organization. Its mission is to significantly reduce the number of undernourished children locally and around the world. The meals are packaged by volunteers and delivered to starving people with the help of the coalition’s worldwide partners.

“The first year we partnered with the coalition was 2014,” Acton said. “We started very small with 10,000 meals. Then it got to over 150,000 meals. We love to support local and worldwide efforts. The coalition really believes in feeding people around the world and around the corner.”

This year’s packaging marks the first year the church has done it since 2020. It also will be the first time The War Memorial has teamed up with the church for this endeavor.

Grosse Pointe Schools team up with War Memorial for learning program

For over a month, The War Memorial (TWM) has embarked on an opportunity with Grosse Pointe Public Schools where students participate in a work-based learning program.

“This program works with special education secondary students with disabilities to provide pre-vocational/vocational training opportunities to obtain work and social skills, as well as allow them to explore employment opportunities, assisting students in making a successful transition to living and working as independently as possible after leaving the public school system,” Nikki Charbonneau, chief operating officer at TWM, said.

The students, from Grosse Pointe Community Campus Program, will be on site with a job coach a couple of days a week for a few hours through May. This is the first time TWM has been a job site as part of the school districts transition services program.

“It’s so joyful to see students in that situation where they are excited to be there to learn and be successful,” Kimberly King, special education transition services coordinator at Grosse Pointe Public Schools, said. “It builds their confidence and I get to see students shine.”

As part of the program, department heads at TWM provided a list of tasks the students can work on each week. Tasks include cleaning, restocking, light clerical work, preparing mailing, labelling, light landscaping, dishwashing, setting tables, and more.

Board director part of two teams involved in developing new Alger Center

Amy Chesterton jokes that she got her chocolate mixed with her peanut butter when it comes to the new Fred M. Alger Center at The War Memorial.

“When we were going through it, considering the possible renovation, I was hesitant to recommend ROSSETTI, but knew that we were the best from a hospitality standpoint.”

Chesterton, of Grosse Pointe Park, has been on The War Memorial Association Board of Directors for about seven years. She is also a partner at ROSSETTI, a Detroit architecture firm, and the director of urban planning. Chesterton has worked at ROSSETTI for five years. ROSSETTI was the architect for the new 25,000 square foot facility at The War Memorial, which opened in November.

Chesterton described the development of the Alger Center as nerve-wracking for her. She explained her involvement in the project as an “arms-length” partner, trying to not get involved in the day-to-day work, rather, she received a monthly update about the project’s progress from ROSSETTI colleagues.

“The Alger Center was the first thing we’ve done at ROSSETTI that was in our backyard,” Chesterton said. “So much of our work is national and international. It’s something that I’m going to see every day.” Walking through the center for the first time last year, Chesterton said she was super proud of the work done by all.

Edition No. 108

In our 108th edition of Inspired Thoughts, we share a notable moment in local history when Dr. King visited Grosse Pointe South High School in March 1968; and a local group looks to offer further perspective and insight to be offered at The Story of Ukraine talk.

Arts and Culture

A notable moment in local history when Dr. King visited Grosse Pointe South High School in March 1968.

Community and Family

Much has been said since Russia invaded Ukraine last February. One group looks to offer further perspective and insight to be offered at The Story of Ukraine talk.

March 14, 1968
“The Other America”

As Martin Luther King, Jr. Day nears, we’d like to revisit an Inspired Thoughts entry highlining a moment in history where Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. visited Grosse Pointe.

This March will mark fifty-five years since the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. visited Grosse Pointe. And while Grosse Pointe is a special place filled with its own cultural relevancy, the historical significance of Dr. King’s visit (during the height of the Civil Rights Movement and only a few weeks prior to his assassination) is not lost on us.

On March 14, 1968, King addressed a crowd of over two-thousand in the gymnasium at Grosse Pointe South High School. In his speech titled “The Other America,” King challenged the community to address the nation’s race problem, face their own biases, and engage in thoughtful and honest conversations to move forward. As expected, that evening drew the attention of many naysayers and those who adamantly disregarded and discredited Dr. King’s rhetoric (he was heckled over thirty times during his speech and over one hundred protestors gathered outside the gymnasiums that evening). However, as to the credit of much of his legacy, Dr. King was not deterred by hateful comments. This speech, similar to many others he gave, examined and critiqued race, poverty, and militarism, as he aimed to emphasize his vision of a world where equality was holistic.

And now, in 2023, we feel it is appropriate to again highlight this local moment in history. A catalyst for change, Dr. King’s words spoken that evening in 1968 serve as a reminder that to build a more perfect union moving forward, we must learn from the mistakes of our past.

Read the full speech here, courtesy of our friends at The Grosse Pointe Historical Society.

Local community to gather for special presentation

The resilience of the Ukrainian people will be one point addressed at an upcoming talk in Grosse Pointe.

Natalie Melnyczuk serves as the keynote speaker for It’s About More Than it Seems: The Story of Ukraine. The event is planned for Jan. 28 at 11 a.m. at the Village Grille, located at 16930 Kercheval Ave., in Grosse Pointe. The talk focuses on why Russia invaded, how its goals and calculations have and haven’t changed, and how the roles of women and education in Ukraine have contributed to the resilience.

Melnyczuk has spent 30 years as an analyst, academic, and diplomat, has worked as a political officer in the Political Affairs and Security Policy Division at NATO headquarters in Belgium, and as a NATO representative to Ukraine as the head of NATO Information and Documentation Center in Ukraine, where she lived for six years.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Grosse Pointe is an active branch located in the Grosse Pointe area. It is an affiliate branch of the AAUW National organization. Its mission is to advance gender equity for women and girls through research, education and advocacy.

Lunch will be served and the cost to register is $30. To learn more, visit the link in the box below.

The return of a community favorite, in partnership with Pine Knob Ski and Snowboard Resort!

Warm up this winter with the return of the Dave Bennett Winter Jazz Brunch Series.

The series includes three concerts – one by Bennett and his four-member jazz band on Feb. 5, jazz drummer Sean Dobbins on Jan. 22, and jazz pianist Cliff Monear on March 19. Brunch begins at 11 a.m. with the concert commencing at 12:15 p.m. and lasts until about 1:45 p.m.

“Cliff and Sean are some of the best musicians in the Michigan area and the country,” Bennett said. “They’ve done the series before and it’s always been a great time and turnout. It’s a nice mixture.”

Bennett is a jazz clarinet player and a Mack Avenue Records artist. He fuses serious jazz improvisation with a host of modern pop influences.

“The new album is a little bit of a departure from what we’ve done before,” Bennett said when asked what folks can expect from his February performance. “I don’t do strictly jazz. I play piano, guitar and sing. It’s a mixture of jazz-swing and a little bit of 1950s rockabilly. They will hear a lot of songs they like to hear, but also a lot of new stuff we’ve added to the show. There’s a lot of joy in the show.”

His most recent album, “Nowhere Fast,” was released in June of 2022. Bennett said stylistically he writes jazz, “surf rock, Chris Isaak-Roy Orbison style.” Bennett’s other albums include “Don’t Be That Way” and “Blood Moon.”

The first brunch series at The War Memorial with Bennett came in January 2019.

“It was a wonderful thing and very honored that they asked me to help curate it,” he said. “I’ve played Grosse Pointe for a number of years now when we’re not on the road and there’s a lot of love in the community and have treated us with much kindness. I’m glad to do it again.”

Bennett has been a featured soloist at Carnegie Hall with The New York Pops in 2013, and has been featured with 35 other U.S. and Canadian orchestras including Nashville, Detroit, Omaha, Toronto, Calgary and Jacksonville. Some of his annual appearances include The Elkhart Jazz Festival, The Suncoast Classic Jazz Festival, and The Arizona Classic Jazz Festival.

Fun and adventure awaits with the Ski Hi Club

Kicking off our first entry of 2023, The War Memorial is pleased to once again offer Ski Hi Club. The club, for youth and teens, was last offered in 2021 and is a decades-long winter tradition.

From Jan. 19 to Feb. 17, Ski Hi Club nights run on Friday evenings, from 5:30 to 10 p.m. at Pine Knob Ski and Snowboard Resort in Clarkston. Upon arrival at Pine Knob, Ski Hi Club members will check in with our Ski Hi coordinator at a designated table in the Pinery Café to receive their lift tickets and equipment rentals.

The club offers youth a chance to learn how to ski or snowboard and develop a life-long love for fun on the slopes. For many generations, joining Ski Hi is much like participating in a school sport or afterschool club - weekly participation and commitment is emphasized. To ensure learning, safety, and fun on the hill, club members will have the option to add on equipment rentals and group or private lessons to hone their skills and experience the joy of winter sports all season long.

Ski Hi is open to students age 7 -18 years old. Students have the option of riding charter bus transportation between The War Memorial and Pine Knob. Elementary students, age 7 to fourth grade, and club members opting to not ride the bus, must be responsible for their own transportation to Pine Knob.

Although this year’s program is already in full swing, learn more about how your child can be part of the club next year! Check out the box below for more details to prep for 2024!

The best of Inspired Thoughts 2022

2022 is almost in the past and with it comes a time of reflection. This week, we link you to one highlight from each quarter of the year from The War Memorial’s Inspired Thoughts series.

January-March: Edition No. 63, from March 3- Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, we focused on stories on how Ukrainian visual and performing artists and arts institution responded to the news, how the invasion prompted charitable and advocacy efforts by local Ukrainian Americans, and what effect it had on the U.S., Europe, and the world. View the original entry at the box below.

April-June: Edition No. 71, from April 28- With patriotism a core component of The War Memorial, this week’s entry shined a light on the Michigan World War II Legacy Memorial, which held a groundbreaking ceremony at Memorial Park in Royal Oak. Check out the original entry at the box below.

July-September: Edition No. 87 from Aug. 18- In this edition, we looked at how one artist depicted the cherished Alger House with an oil painting. On a late July afternoon, Rose Rhodes set up her oil painting stand in front of The War Memorial. The 16-by-20 inch oil on linen painting is titled “Sunny Afternoon at the War Memorial.” We also looked at how a War Memorial collaboration extends beyond Grosse Pointe border through Jefferson East partnership. View the original entry at the box below.

October-December: Edition No. 100 from Nov. 17- Inspired Thoughts got into the Christmas spirit while showcasing the work that Toys for Tots does in metro Detroit. In November, the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program held a toy collection event at the Fred M. Alger Center at The War Memorial. Folks dropped off a new, unwrapped toy, enough to fill a 25-foot moving van that goes to area children. Check out the original entry at the box below.

Christmas is here! In the final days before the big day, we take a look at a USA Today article that serves as a guide to over 100 family films to watch this holiday!

Detroit welcomes home internationally renowned artist McArthur Binion

Library Street Collective recently announced its exhibition with Detroit native and widely celebrated artist McArthur Binion titled Self:Portraits. With a career spanning over forty years, Binion is known for producing mixed media works that marry the language of rhythmic Minimalist abstraction with personal memory and autobiography. On display will be a selection of paintings from Binion’s Self:Portrait series, six of which were created in 2016, and seven of which were created over the last few months.

Within the Self:Portraits, Binion lays a foundation for each work constructed of personal photographs and documents—this critical underlayer is what the artist refers to as the “under-conscious” of the work.

Self:Portraits constitutes a homecoming of sorts, not only is it Binion’s first exhibition in his hometown in nearly two decades, but it also precedes his return to the city as a part-time resident. It is with a motivation to give back to Detroit’s creative community that Binion founded the Modern Ancient Brown Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports the intersection between the visual and literary arts in the Detroit community through an artist grant campaign and residency program. Established in 2019, the foundation’s headquarters will open in 2023 in Detroit’s East Village. Binion will be donating 100% of his proceeds from the exhibition to Modern Ancient Brown; Library Street Collective will be donating a substantial portion of its proceeds to the further development of the public skatepark at the Shepherd, designed by Binion and legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk. The skatepark is spearheaded by the gallery and in partnership with Jefferson East, Inc, a neighborhood non-profit organization that serves low-income populations on the City’s east side and five historic bordering neighborhoods.

Binion’s Self:Portraits will be on view until Feb. 22, 2023. Learn more at the button below.

Community and Family

Over 300 people came together on one day in hopes of giving a child a brighter Christmas season through Toys for Tots.

Miniature Moments: A Journey Through Hallmark® Keepsake Ornaments

Presented by The Henry Ford

Permanently on display inside the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation, Miniature Moments: A Journey Through Hallmark ® Keepsake Ornaments explores the museum’s extensive collection of nearly 7,000 Hallmark ornaments made between 1973 and 2009. The event is open to the public November 20.

Founded by teenage entrepreneur J.C. Hall in 1910, Hallmark did not start with ornaments but with cards. At a young age, J.C. Hall opened a postcard company in a small town in Nebraska. With limited opportunities, he crammed two shoeboxes full of postcards and boarded a train for Kansas City, Missouri, where he and his brother opened a stationery store. When a fire wiped out the store’s inventory, the brothers bought an engraving firm, setting the stage for the first Hallmark card designs.

Hallmark revolutionized Christmas decorating in the late 20th century by developing an increasing variety of ornaments for a wide range of distinctly different customers. In 1973, Hallmark introduced a small line of Keepsake ornaments. The initial product line of primarily glass ball ornaments evolved into an emphasis on figural ornaments.

As we glide into the season, let Henry Ford’s Museum of American Innovation allow you to relive holiday memories, remember special people and events, and find new inspiration for your own holiday traditions!

Toys for Tots brings collection efforts to The War Memorial

Donna Satterfield saw it as a way to promote a great cause in an amazing new space.

Nov. 11, the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program held a toy collection event at the Fred M. Alger Center at The War Memorial. Folks dropped off a new, unwrapped toy. This year’s nationwide collection campaign marks the 75th anniversary. This was the 20th anniversary of the local collection event, typically held at The War Memorial.

Satterfield, Toys for Tots co-chair, said the number of toys collected was enough to fill a 25-foot moving van that goes to area children.

“The most rewarding part is seeing the generosity of our community and donating toys for these children who otherwise wouldn’t have a very happy Christmas,” she said. “The War Memorial looks beautiful and everybody thought so. It was a really nice event.”

The program’s mission is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. Its primary goal is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens.

Last year in Wayne and Macomb counties, nearly 34,000 toys were distributed, and over 10,000 children were supported. For more information on this year’s campaign, click on the button below.

The Family Center Celebrates 22 years with new venue for Hollyfest benefit

The Family Center of Grosse Pointe and Harper Woods’ signature fundraising event, Hollyfest, is planned for Nov. 17 at The Fred M. Alger Center at The War Memorial. It is set from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Hollyfest, sponsored in part by The War Memorial, is an opportunity to raise funds for the Center’s ability to deliver programs and resources in the community.

“It’s also a great celebration of the work we’ve accomplished over the last year and a really fun party,” Jennifer Bingaman, executive director of The Family Center, said. “We are so excited to be one of the first events in the new venue. This will be an incredible community get-together with a bonus first peek at the revamped site.”

Bingaman believes this will be the first time that Hollyfest will be held at The War Memorial. She said around 200 people are expected to attend.

The Family Center is a nonprofit community organization that calls The War Memorial home. It offers free programs and resources from local experts on a wide range of topics aimed at building strong families and helping parents raise children who will become competent, caring, and responsible community members.

“We need this money from the fundraiser to be able to provide free programs and resources for the community,” Bingaman said. “We need it to fulfill our mission.”

Attendees will enjoy a festive evening of cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, a strolling dinner, and music. A variety of exciting gifts and experiences will be available during a live and silent auction, including the opportunity to bid on a ride on the Grosse Pointe Farms fire engine in the Santa Parade and a luxury culinary immersion tour of Tuscany courtesy of Gunnell Innovation.
