Tree Lighting Ceremony
A season filled with Holiday Traditions at the War Memorial kicks off on November 22nd with our Tree Lighting Ceremony, reminiscent of community celebrations long past.
The 20-foot decorated tree will be prominently placed in front of our fountain, evoking a sense of Holiday magic for any age! This festive celebration includes hot chocolate, live ice sculpting, a vintage holiday marketplace, caroling, crafts, and much more.
While the main event is free, registration is required. Doors open for all activities at 4pm, Tree Lighting Ceremony takes place at 5:30pm.
New this year! Visits with Santa will also be available in the ballroom after the ceremony. A small number of pre-registration slots are available. Those without pre-registration will still be able to visit with Santa, but wait times may vary. Visits with Santa are $5 per child. If you have multiple children, please register them so that we can assure Santa has time to visit with everyone. Thank you!
PARKING
Parking is available in our onsite lot, with overflow parking available on the street. Please note that, as with large events of this nature, parking will be limited. We encourage allowing extra time to park and to consider carpooling or walking to the venue as you are able.
VINTAGE HOLIDAY MARKET
Step inside the historic Alger House and shop our unique pop-up shops, featuring a charming array of both vintage gifts and holiday themed merchandise.
Located in the Alger House Reception Room, Library, Dining Room & Palm Room from 4-7pm.
Holiday Craft Station
Located in the Grosse Pointe Artists Association Art Gallery from 4-7pm.
Live Ice Sculpting
Watch as the finishing touches are put on of an Ice Sculpture in front of the Alger House, and take a fun family photo in front afterward!
Gingerbread Competition Voting
It’s back! Gingerbread competition voting will be open in time for the ceremony. Come mid-November, you can vote in our online poll, or while attending the Tree Lighting Ceremony. The winning team will be announced during the ceremony.
Visits with Santa

Grab a Cup of Hot Cocoa & More
Warm up sampling the War Memorial’s signature Hot Chocolate, with spiked hot cocoa options available for adults! The War Memorial Hospitality team will have a festive menu ready for purchase.
The War Memorial Bar and Food Stand is location in the Alger Center.
