Driving Growth and Giving: Dr. Jodie Rappe Strengthens The War Memorial’s Mission

Since its founding, The War Memorial has stood as a place to honor service, preserve stories, and bring generations together. Board members like Dr. Jodie Rappe help carry that legacy forward with leadership rooted in experience and gratitude.

When Rappe joined the Board of Directors in 2023, her decision reflected a deep respect for those who have served and a desire to ensure their stories continue to inspire. As a veteran herself, her perspective has been shaped by service, resilience, and teamwork. After completing a distinguished career in the United States Navy and retiring in 2018 as a Commander, she continued her leadership journey in healthcare. Today, she serves as Chief Medical Officer of Corewell Health Beaumont Grosse Pointe. Trained as a Family Medicine physician, she has dedicated her career to caring for others while guiding teams through complexity and growth.

We recently asked Jodie to reflect on her decision to serve and what continues to draw her to The War Memorial’s mission.

It’s important to me that we continue to celebrate our veterans and ensure their experiences inspire future generations. The War Memorial represents a living history, and I see board service as an opportunity to help steward its mission and create meaningful connections within our community.

Leadership Rooted in Collaboration

Throughout her professional life, Rappe has developed a reputation for motivating teams, organizing meaningful initiatives, and strengthening community relationships. She brings experience in project management, communication, and creative problem-solving to the Board, particularly through her work on the Development Committee.

The Development Committee is at the forefront of creating new opportunities for engagement and growth. I look forward to helping design innovative programs that reach both veterans and the broader community, whether it’s educational workshops, special events, or collaborations with local schools. The committee’s work is essential to expanding our impact and ensuring sustainability.

Her leadership philosophy begins with listening.

I believe in listening first, understanding the needs and strengths of each team member, and fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and heard. Collaboration is at the heart of my approach. I encourage open dialogue, shared goals, and collective problem-solving. This helps us harness our diverse perspectives and ensures we move forward together.

Strengthening the Mission Through Development

For Rappe, supporting The War Memorial extends beyond board service. She believes strong donor relationships are built on appreciation, transparency, and shared purpose.

I believe in personal thank-you notes, invitations to exclusive donor events, and sharing updates on how their contributions make a difference. By involving donors in our mission and celebrating their impact, we create lasting partnerships that support The War Memorial’s future.

Her commitment is reflected in action. Rappe sponsors community events such as Holiday Traditions and participates in the monthly sustainer programing, Wings of Hope. Rappe also contributes to An Evening of Red, White & Blue, The War Memorial’s signature event and one of Rappe’s favorites of the year, by helping secure meaningful auction experiences and sharing the event’s mission and impact within her personal and professional networks, therefore expanding the event’s reach further across the region.

A Place That Brings People Together

What resonates most deeply with Rappe is the sense of connection found throughout the campus.

Whether it’s a commemorative event, a family celebration, or a quiet visit to reflect, The War Memorial brings people together and creates lasting bonds. It’s a place where stories are told, memories honored, and gratitude expressed.

Looking ahead, she sees continued opportunity to deepen outreach to veterans and foster meaningful community engagement.

I’d love to see The War Memorial offer mentorship programs, storytelling sessions, and wellness activities tailored to veterans and their families. We could also host community events that bridge generations and cultures, making The War Memorial a welcoming space for all.

Rappe is a proud mother to Hayden and Cameron. She and her husband, Dr. Brian Dimmer, a fellow veteran and physician, have been married for twenty-one years this May. They remain deeply rooted in the community they serve.

We are grateful for her leadership, generosity, and steadfast commitment to honoring those who served while strengthening The War Memorial’s future.
