9/11 Service of Remembrance planned at The War Memorial

GROSSE POINTE FARMS Aug. 21, 2025 –  It’s been nearly 24 years since the deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history, and The War Memorial is doing its part to commemorate that catastrophic day.

The Service of Remembrance will be held on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 8:30 a.m. on the lakefront lawn of the historic Alger House at The War Memorial.

This will be a moment where all people can come together in solemn remembrance of a day that forever left its mark in American history.

“As we mark the anniversary of 9/11, we pause to honor the lives lost, the heroes who rose in the face of tragedy, and the enduring spirit of unity that followed,” Maria Miller, president & CEO of The War Memorial, said. “This day reminds us of the strength we find in one another during our most challenging moments. At The War Memorial, we stand in remembrance and gratitude, committed to fostering a culture of resilience, compassion, and community.”

This year’s personal reflection will be provided by Ed Zier, the author of the 2021 book “Undaunted.” On 9/11, Zier was the chief operating officer of Baseline Financial Services. Baseline had offices on the 77th and 78th floors of the South Tower at the World Trade Center.

“In the history of the human race, those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it,” Zier said. “This was the most heinous attack ever launched on the soil of the United States. It surpassed Pearl Harbor by 500 deaths. It was a significant event that showed the best this country had to offer to simply stand stall and not let it crush us.”

Three moments of silence will take place at the service – one each representing when American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the North and South towers of the World Trade Center, and one moment of silence representing when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon and United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. A reading of the Michigan lives lost in the attacks will also be held.

A coffee social hour will be held in the Alger Center Community Room after the service for all to gather for conversation, reflection, and fellowship.

The Service of Remembrance is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is requested.
