Some Assembly Required: An Assemblage Workshop with Marat Paransky

Brought to you by the Grosse Pointe Artist Association:

People have been combining found objects into sculptures for a long time–way before we learned how to carve stone or work with metals. Today, this sculpture-by-other-means is called Assemblage.

Some Assembly Required is a one-day workshop that will cover some of the many materials and techniques used in creating three-dimensional artworks. Through both demos and slideshows, there will be detailed instruction on:

• Adhesion methods
• Surface preparation
• Material combinations
• Experiments
• Finishing and presentation
• Examples from art history

Students will have time to work on their projects and get personal feedback from the instructor.

Each student is asked to bring the following supplies:

• A variety of raw materials to work with such as: wood/metal/plastic objects, cardboard, found parts, fabrics, old artworks to chop up and reassemble, etc.
• Scissors
• Box cutter or utility knife
• Brushes for glues
• Glues: acrylic gel medium, all purpose glue,   wood glue, hot glue gun, epoxy, etc. Bring whatever you have. Marat will bring glues to share.
• Screws, drill bits and a drill, if you want to work with wood. (Marat will bring his for you to borrow).
• Pencil and pad for notes

Old clothes and an apron are recommended.
