About the film
Few Detroit Red Wings are as revered as Bob Probert — Bruise Brother, all-time franchise penalty leader, enforcer for Steve Yzerman and all-around tough guy. Despite the assertion of its title, Geordie Day’s film about Probert, who died in 2010 of heart failure, goes behind the scandalous headlines to locate the complexity in that legendary bloody-knuckled toughness, presenting Probie as a kind, flawed soul who loved his wife and kids while battling the demons of addiction and neurodegenerative disease. “Tough Guy” is a sobering and ultimately heartbreaking case study about what can happen to athletes after the game is over.
