Grosse Pointe Chamber Music, The War Memorial’s resident chamber music partner, has been presenting Sunday afternoon concerts since 1962. Our programs feature classical music written for small ensembles. Concerts are held in the intimate setting of the Alger House Library, or in the spacious ballroom overlooking Lake Saint Clair. Music lovers of all ages are welcome!

Grosse Pointe Chamber Music History

The group was formed in 1962, and the first concert was performed in January 1963. In 1966, GPCM changed its name, becoming the Chamber Music Workshop, and consisted of a chamber string orchestra, as well as smaller groups with piano and winds. Performances took up a full afternoon in January, and for the next bit of time two workshops were held yearly. Shortly thereafter, another name change occurred without formal notice; the group became known as the Chamber Music Players of Grosse Pointe.

By 1968, the group’s programming had evolved into a series of monthly concerts in which members and guests would perform for each other and a loyal audience of chamber music lovers. In addition, the workshops continued for several years.

Sometime more recently, the Chamber Music Players of Grosse Pointe assumed the briefer name of Grosse Pointe Chamber Music. GPCM has continued uninterrupted ever since, and in January 2013 the group celebrated its 50th anniversary.
